Unroasted: Asia/India

UNROASTED ASIA/INDIA COFFEES: – Myths and history have shaped the inheritance of coffee cultivation in Asia. From Robusta beans smuggled into India by a pilgrim from Yemen to the lucrative export of Indonesian beans by the Dutch East India Company during the 16th century, Asia now supplies a significant percentage of commodity-grade coffee to the coffee market. Yemen is perhaps the most notable exception, with comparatively small export quantities of unique beans but remains in strong demand globally.
COFFEE MYTHS AND LEGENDS: – The origins of coffee production in southern India are also entwined with myths and legends. The story goes that a pilgrim named Baba Budan passed through Yemen in 1670 while returning from Mecca and smuggled out seven seeds, the export of which was strictly controlled.
NEPAL: – Nepal coffees are grown in the Himalayan Mountain range, from one of the northernmost coffee producing regions in the world. Considered a close rival to the famous Jamaican Blue Mountain coffees. A honey-moon style coffee with an awesome creamy satiny mouthfeel, pleasant mild apple-like acidity, smooth milk chocolate notes, a maple syrup like sweetness, and exhibits chocolate/caramel/cedar notes in the aroma. Displays nuances of cranberries, grapes, prunes in the cup, and some nice white peach notes in the finish. This Nepal coffee is well worth seeking out, savory and sweet in structure with gentle acidity, a crisp, satiny mouthfeel.
MONSOONED MALABAR: – The origination of Indian Monsoon Malabar coffee dates back to the era when wooden ships loaded with raw coffee beans would take up to 6 months to travel from India to Europe, sailing around the Cape of Good Hope. During the months that the coffee beans were transported at sea, the humidity and ocean winds combined to cause the coffee to change from its fresh green color to a more aged, pale yellow hue. Upon their arrival in Europe, the coffee beans were found to have a unique mellowness, soft and smooth tasting throughout the cup. A creamy mellow coffee with medium body, medium acidity, deep pleasing undertones, an exceptionally smooth cup. Flavor characteristics are notes of baker’s chocolate, smoky tobacco/wood notes, slight spice, with a molasses like finish.
PNG COFFEE: Papua New Guinea coffees ‘often abbreviated to PNG’ are grown on the eastern side of the island of New Guinea. It is said these coffee seedlings were planted in the early 1900’s from the Jamaican Blue Mountain varietals. The PNG growing region is quite favorable to producing coffees with similar Jamaican Blue Mountain characteristics in the cup. A pleasant well-balanced, complex cup. The sweet, creamy, milk chocolate style body is accented with pungent mango/papaya/orange fruit nuances. The clean tasting, full-bodied cup, along with the delicate floral notes makes this an excellent crowd-pleasing coffee!
INDIA ROBUSTA CHERRY: – India Cherry Robusta is grown on the eastern side of the Western Ghats mountain range. The range was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is one of the most biologically diverse areas of the world. The area is home to more than 5,000 species of flowering plants and 500 species of birds. Many of the farms in the area have been operating for nearly a hundred years, and have been passed down from one generation to another. The farms we source from are located in the Sakleshpu and Coorg districts in Karnataka, India.
