Finca Nueva Granada named after the last Arab Fortress in Europe, was one of the first farms to achieve Rainforest Alliance Certification. Located between two of Guatemala’s looming volcanoes, Tajumulco and Tacana. Finca Nueva Granada has become a perfect example of how a farm can become more than a source of delicious coffee. The farm has on site schooling and implements impressive sustainable practices for coffee processing. Finca Nueva Granada uses its own clear spring water for pulping and implements “shade-grown” techniques to protect the environment in which it relies so heavily upon.
The highlands of Guatemala produce several of the world’s finest and most distinctive coffees. The mountain basin surrounding the austerely beautiful colonial Guatemala Antigua produces the most distinguished of these highland coffees Guatemala Antigua, a coffee that combines complex nuance (smoke, spice, flowers, occasionally chocolate) with acidity ranging from gently bright to austerely powerful. San Marcos elevation 7,868 feet (2,398 meters) has the highest rainfall pattern of the 8 coffee growing regions in Guatemala, reaching up to 200 inches. The seasonal rains come sooner than in other regions, producing earliest flowering. As in all of Guatemala’s remote regions, most coffee is cultivated on farms with their own processing mills. Because of the unpredictability of rainfall during the harvest season, much of the coffee is pre-dried in the sun and finished in a dryer.
